Preemergence herbicide injury on soybeans? Or maybe not?

Many soybeans in southern Minnesota were ready to emerge when the recent cold weather brought concerns of both frost and herbicide injury. Most soybeans were still below ground and protected from freezing temperatures. However in some areas of the state, seedlings may show injury after extended contact with preemergence herbicides in the soil (Figure 1). When evaluating soybean stands in the coming days, keep an eye out for herbicide-induced crop injury, especially in wetter areas of the state.

2020 Liberty Insights

Liberty has been proven to give excellent control of a broad spectrum of weeds. NuWay Agronomy has helped put together a few tips to help you get the most out of your post application with Liberty.

-When it comes to Liberty, timing is critical. It is important to spray weeds when they are less than 3” tall. Make sure to avoid early morning and late afternoon applications.

-Pay close attention to the weather when making an application. The ideal day to spray Liberty for maximum efficacy is a warm and humid day, with plenty of sunshine.

-Contact is important when it comes spraying Liberty. It is important to use at least a minimum of 20 gallons of water per acre as a carrier. Adding a Water Conditioner like Class Act NG to your tank mix can make a huge difference when it comes to weed control. Class Act NG has been shown to increase herbicide uptake in weeds by over twice the amount of AMS alone.

Precision agriculture has created a multitude of ideas and services for more intensively farming the land. Current thought is to tie together as many of these ideas and services as possible in a systems approach, in order to maximize the profitability of each acre.

This means matching our recommendations to the unique needs of your fields. In doing this, we avoid relying on one product, software brand or technology tool like R7®, Climate FieldView™ or Adapt-N. Each field requires a different tool or set of tools, and these tools may change from year to year.
